faux granite coasters {handmade gift kids can make}

Yesterday I shared the pen & alcohol tile art my younger kids had so much fun creating when their Grandma visited for spring break. Today I’m going to show you how my older kids put their own twist on that fun art project and created colorful faux granite coasters. The coasters turn out so pretty and would make a perfect for an inexpensive handmade gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or Christmas.

Kids can make these DIY coasters using pens, alcohol, and FIRE! Fun and easy handmade gift kids can make.

If you missed yesterday’s post, you’ll want to check it out. It shows how kids can scribble on a tile, add alcohol to blend the ink, and then burn off the alcohol to reveal a gorgeous design. If you keep a little more alcohol in a spritz bottle, you can turn those designs into something that looks like a pretty colored granite with one more step.

Pretty, right?

Here’s a quick video that shows how simple this process is:

To finish off these coasters we colored the tile edges with a permanent marker, sprayed the tiles with polyurethane to seal them, and added adhesive felt circles to the undersides.

Remember to find all the supplies needed and details from yesterday’s post and please remember to use caution during the burning step. And don’t forget:
